How I discovered I was spending £680 a year on lawn mowing without ever calculating it
In spring 2024 I sat down to review my household maintenance budget and realised I had no idea what I was actually spending on the garden. I had a contractor who came fortnightly from April through October. The invoice was £26 per visit, which felt perfectly reasonable.
When I multiplied it out: 26 weeks, fortnightly = 13 visits. 13 × £26 = £338. That seemed fine. Except my contractor also came in March for a clearance cut, twice in June during a particularly wet growing spell, and again in November after a late growth flush. Total visits that year: 18. Total spend: 18 × £26 = £468.
And that was the mowing only. I had also bought a bag of spring lawn feed, a bottle of moss killer, and a box of grass seed for the bare patches by the gate. Adding those in brought the total garden maintenance spend for the year to approximately £540.
